10 Reasons Why

Rockstar: Supernova is better than Celebrity Duets

I like Rockstar: Supernova so much more than I do FOX's new foray into reality TV music competitions, Celebrity Duets. Here are ten reasons why.

1) The judging panel rocks harder. Dave Navarro, Gilby Clarke, Jason Newsted and Tommy Lee are much cooler than David Foster, Little Richard and Marie Osmond. I'll even venture to say that their critiques are more helpful. At least they make sense. As I was watching Celebrity Duets the other night, all I kept thinking was, "what the heck is Little Richard even trying to say?"

2) Rock Star is about rock n' roll. Hard core rock. In your face rock. Punk attitude. The songs you hear on Rock Star: Supernova come from artists such as Billy Idol, Nirvana, Live, The Talking Heads, David Bowie and a ton of other cool rock musicians. They're a joy to listen to. On Celebrity Duets, you get Michael Bolton, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson and a bucket full of country. This stuff will put you to sleep. For real!

3) The performers on Supernova are working hard towards a coveted prize: to front one of the most talked about new rock bands to hit the globe in decades. The celebs on Celebrity Duets are trying to branch out into another area to see if they can do it. These aren't recording artists who live and breathe music. These are pampered celebs, for the most part, who've fallen out of the spotlight who want a way back in. Ugh!

4) Brooke Burke. She's truly the hostess with the mostest. The beauteous Burke is a welcome addition to the show. She doesn't get all crazy or try to be funny. She's just Brooke. Wayne Brady, as much as I love him, seems to be trying too hard. Maybe the talented improv comedian and singer wants to be up there crooning himself.

5) Booze and drama. The contestants on Rock Star: Supernova are wild and crazy. They have booze-soaked parties at the mansion they're living in. They've had drama, complete with blood and broken glass. They've argued. They've hugged. They've trashed each other - and the mansion. You're not gonna see that backstage at Celebrity Duets, now are you?

6) Dilana. Dilana is a true wonder. She's got the total rock star package. She's damaged. She's dirty. She's naughty. She's honest. She's raw. She's pierced. She's real, and she can wail, y'all. She's also one tough cookie. I'm pretty sure if she and Lucy "Xena" Lawless got into a fistfight, Dilana would crush her. Hands down.

7) Mark Burnett. Mark Burnett, the reality TV genius who's brought you Survivor, the Apprentice and the Contender, is the brains behind this machine so you know it's got to be good. Mark and company aren't just trying to churn out an American Idol wannabe. They've created something original and interesting. Take that, Simon Cowell.

8) Nudity. This season on Rockstar: Supernova both Dilana and Toby ran around the pool naked. I am pretty sure that FOX won't allow their divas and divos to do the same. Besides, who'd want to see Cheech in the buff anyway?

9) Original songs. Part of the competition of RockStar: Supernova has the contestants writing and performing their own stuff. Ryan, Patrice and Zayra got to showcase original pieces before they were sent packing. You aren't going to see Lea Thompson pen the love theme to Howard the Duck on this season of Celebrity Duets.

10) The House Band. These guys are awesomely talented. They can play just about any song, or arrangement thereof. They're true professionals who've worked with Billy Idol, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan and Poison, among others. I look forward to listening to what these guys are gonna play. The Celebrity Duets band sounds like they're playing Muzak, but that could just be because the catalog they're playing from doesn't rock.
