Dancing With the Stars Plagued With Injuries
Illness and Severe Injuries Haunt Reality TV Cast in Fall 2008

The fall 2002 season of Dancing With the Stars has seen glitz, glamour and B-list celebrities getting their groove on. There have been the minor sprained ankles and exhaustion like past seasons but contestants seem to be dropping like flies with serious injuries and illnesses.
The first contestant to drop was comedian Jeffrey Ross. He had a corneal abrasion when his partner's hand grazed his eye but didn’t have to suffer for long; he was the first celebrity voted off the show.
Misty May
Next came Misty May-Treanor. After battling through back-to-back Olympic gold medals, May-Treanor was taken down by a ruptured Achilles tendon while rehearsing with her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She had to withdraw from the show, undergo surgery and is currently going through nine months of rehabilitation.
When asked by People what her next move is, May-Treanor promised she will be back on the volleyball court and possibly the dance floor. She also said that a nine month hiatus for rehab might be the perfect time to start a family. “Having nine months off? That could happen,” May-Treanor stated.
Julianne Hough
The next major injury didn't actually occur on the dance floor but the effects were felt there. Julianne Hough started to feel nauseas the day of the live results show. She soldiered through the day and even performed an encore jitterbug during the broadcast. After the show, however, she was rushed to the hospital with debilitating stomach pains.
She later found out she has a severe case of endometriosis which would result in a surgery and a two-week absence from the show. According to a blog on her website, Hough explained her condition as ” a common condition in which tissue from the uterus lining grows outside the uterus, causing painful cysts and possible infertility.” Edyta Sliwinska will take over during Hough’s absence since Sliwinska was already eliminated a few weeks prior with her celebrity partner, Jeffrey Ross.
Other Random Injuries on Dancing with the Stars:
- Brooke Burke severely bruised her ankle during practice but still performed that week, albeit a little sore.
- Professional dance Lacey Schwimmer found out she has the same disease Hough was sidelined with, although Schwimmer’s isn’t as severe and doesn’t yet require surgery.
- Christian de la Fuenta suffered an injury last season with a torn tendon in his arm. He was injured during a performance with his partner Cheryl Burke and decided to forego surgery until later. He was voted off soon after the injury, underwent surgery and is making a full recovery.
