Danyl Johnson - And I'm Telling You Has X FactorBookmaker Odds on Teacher Shorten Despite Dannii Minogue Gay JibesX Factor Week 1 Review - Saturday October 8, 2009. The 12 hopefuls performed tracks by 'Music Legends' with many deciding to cover guest coach Robbie Williams.
X-Factor favourite Danyl Johnson was left stunned by stinging criticism from his opposing mentors during Saturday’s first live show. The 27-year-old school teacher ended the show with a breath-taking rendition of Jennifer Hudson hit single And I’m Telling You but was then accused of being cocky and not likeable by Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole. Dannii Minogue accuses Danyl Johnson of being bisexualDannii even had the audacity to question Johnson’s sexuality during her assessment of his performance. She said: “It was a true X Factor performance turning a girl’s song into a guys song but if we are to believe what we read in the papers maybe you didn’t need to change the gender reference in it.” Walsh commented: “You’re a great performer but you definitely are the most over-confident person in the competition. You need to be more likeable, you haven’t won the competition yet.” Cheryl added: “I agree with what Louis is saying. There’s a fine line between confidence and cockiness.” However, mentor Simon Cowell was quick to shoot down his opposing judges by stating that the song was ‘one of the best performances I’ve heard in my life.’ Cowell’s comments brought a standing ovation from the studio audience and reduced the stunned Johnson to tears. X Factor Bookmaker OddsThe bookmakers odds for Danyl Johnson have dramatically shortened as low as 11/4 last night making him the runaway favourite to win the show. Lucie Jones is second favourite at 9-4 with Stacey Solomon third at 5-1. The emotional scenes following Johnson’s exceptional performance were undoubtedly the controversial moments of the ‘music legends’ themed show. Other highlights included Lucie Jones’ superb cover of Leona Lewis song Footprints In The Sand and Jamie Archer nailing T-Rex’s Get It On whilst Irish twins John and Edward were ripped to shreds by the judges after their embarrassing version of Robbie Williams’ Rock DJ. Simon Cowell labelled the performance a ‘musical disaster’ and added: “I’ve just had this horrific thought that if you win the competition what it would do. It would be a disaster. I think the truth is Louis has put you through because you’re Irish.” Louis Walsh defended his act saying “I did take a chance but I’m glad I did. Not all the popstars in the chart are great singers.” The twelve acts will discover whether they have been voted through into the second round during the live results show tonight at 8 o’ clock. The show features live performances from Robbie Williams and last year’s X Factor champion Alexandra Burke. Click here for a verdict on each of the twelve contestants’ opening performances.
