Diddy Makes His Own BandDiddy Directs MTV's Making the Band Towards His New Album
The Hip Hop mogul's new album is in the works and decides to focus a reality show around band members rather than Pop groups.
Diddy turns Making the Band into Making His Band for his new album, Last Train to Paris, and surprisingly it works. Gone are past dramatic episodes of girls attempting to both sing AND dance, R&B singers dealing with sharing the spotlight and endless rumors of breakups and "who's dating who." It was starting to get nauseating watching the same redundant American Idol-like auditions with every new season. Raw TalentAll instrumentalists were welcome to audition for Diddy's new project including drummers, violinists, guitarists and pianists. Singers were also welcome to audition; however, as background, these singers undeniably had a gift. It's refreshing to see young musicians with raw talent rather than the occasional over-the-top singing diva who seeks fame. Although, it's uncertain how placing a group of musicians together make for good TV, the audition process of the first episode stresses how important a good band is for a live performance. Making His Band Season Opener In the beginning of the debut episode, Diddy explains his start in the music business and how becoming a producer fell into his lap, producing Jodeci's hit record "Come and Talk to Me" after the scheduled producer failed to show. The rest of the show was for amazing musicians. Women proved that they can rock on the drums just as well as men, bassists played as if they have already played with the greatest and amateurs were quickly rejected before the show could actually begin. This season, Making His Band will follow the musicians perfecting their instruments and will show Diddy as he perfects his new album. Former Danity Kane singer Dawn Richard will also be making an appearance over the course of the season. After the demise of the pop group Danity Kane, Diddy formed a new group, Dirty Money, featuring Dawn and singer/songwriter Keelena, who will also appear on his fifth upcoming album. Some Songs are Just Better LiveMusicians were randomly selected together to play Estelle’s “American Boy.” Just watching the band perform on demand develops the love for live music all over again. While some people would need music sheets, theses talented players just need the song to play in their head to form a perfect jam session. This show is not to see how drama will be played out, but musicians literally battling it out for the top spot. Making His Band is a breath of fresh air when music is become more and more about drum machines and synthesizers. If Diddy is being so meticulous about his backup band then Last Train to Paris, described as “electro Hip Hop soul funk,” can really make for a fantastic album. Watch Making His Band on MTV Mondays at 10pm ET/PT.
