Disney's American Idol AttractionDisney’s Hollywood Studios Will Open Idol Experience in January 2008
After winning the 2008 'American Idol' competition, David Cook became the first singer to star in an "I'm Going to Disney World!" commercial to publicize the attraction.
In addition to Cook’s new commercial (“David Cook, you just won American Idol, what are you going to do next?,” 2007 winner Jordin Sparks announced during the American Idol finale that the new attraction would open in January 2009 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida. American Idol Attraction The purpose of the interactive attraction is to bring the excitement of the top-rated television show to theme park visitors by following the model of the show, which just concluded its seventh season. Disney guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, performing on stage during competition, and judging the performances in a live interactive atmosphere similar to the glitzy American Idol set. The experience will include an audition process, which will be open to everyone eligible to register, where guests perform “live” in front of a Disney producer who will cast visitors for each of the multiple theme park shows each day. If candidates make it through the screening process and backstage preparation (including working with a vocal coach, hair stylist and make-up artist), then they appear before the audience and a panel of judges. For several years, Disney’s Hollywood Studios (formerly known as Disney-MGM Studios) offered a similar experience with an attraction based on the television show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – Play It!” was an exact replica of the high-tech television set, complete with dramatic lighting and music, interactive audience keypads and the coveted hot seat, but featured a 600-seat studio which was three times the size of the New York set for Millionaire. Attraction Winners Can Audition for Television ShowGuest performers with the highest votes compete in the end-of-the-day Grand Finale show at Walt Disney World, with the winner receiving a guaranteed reservation for a future regional stadium audition (without long lines) for the American Idol television show. British music manager Simon Fuller, CEO of 19 Entertainment and creator of American Idol, said in a prepared statement, "One of the most remarkable elements about American Idol is that for a brief moment each week, we can provide TV viewers the opportunity to imagine life as America’s next superstar. Disney’s new attraction perfectly captures what we at American Idol feel is the heart and soul of this brand, real people getting a shot to make their dream a reality.” The coming American Idol attraction joins other new rides and attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios related to movies, television, music, and theater, including Block Party Bash (an interactive parade), Toy Story Mania (a 3-D ride with midway games), and Journey Into Narnia: Prince Caspian.
