TV's Ghost Hunters InternationalSciFi Spin-off Mixes Old and New Elements
The SciFi network is pushing paranormal into the mainstream with Ghost Hunters International, a new spin-off of Ghost Hunters which takes ghost hunting around the globe.
Featuring a few familiar faces from Ghost Hunters, the SciFi network’s new spin-off series mixes old and new elements to showcase ghost hunting around the globe. Ghost Hunters International premiered last week and won big with twenty-something viewers. Last Wednesday, the series premiere snagged a record-breaking 2.8 million viewers, getting huge numbers from the eighteen-to-thirty set. It was the highest ratings for any alternative reality show in the channel’s history - ever. These big numbers helped make the channel the most-watched cable network during Wednesday prime time, and Ghost Hunters International still has plenty of new episodes to offer. Ghost Hunting Around the GlobeFor some fans, there was disappointment even with this suddenly popular new cable series. For starters, the leaders of the original Ghost Hunters show (Jason and Grand) aren’t part of the International team. Both family men, the lead investigators and founders of TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) opted to stay in the States. Instead, they sent out some regular TAPS members (and frequent faces on Ghost Hunters itself) along with a few new paranormal investigators to look for possible ghostly activity around the world. Using electronic equipment such as tape recorders, video and thermal imaging cameras, and EMF detectors, these paranormal investigators attempt to answer one of life’s most lingering questions: what happens to people in death? Taking a somewhat cynical approach to the idea of ghostly entities and the paranormal, the investigators with Ghost Hunters International don’t set out to prove that life after death (ghosts) exists. In fact, their whole gig is about proving it does not. They set out to disprove, to de-bunk, to offer an alternative explanation for so-called paranormal goings-on. Only when the logical possibilities are exhausted, and sufficient evidence is collected, do they dub any activity to be paranormal or outside the ordinary realm in which people routinely dwell. This very different approach to paranormal investigation is what makes the TAPS and GHI teams different, at least to SciFi viewers. Who are these globe-trekking ghost hunters? The Team at Ghost Hunters InternationalA mix of tried-and-true TAPS members and close personal friends of the Ghost Hunters gang, GHI (Ghost Hunters International) poses an interesting mix of personalities. Robb. The newly dubbed leader of GHI, Robb is a personal friend of Jason (TAPS co-founder). During the first episode of Ghost Hunters International Robb showed that he takes the same approach to ghost hunting that SciFi fans have come to expert. Still a little nervous and stiff in front of cameras, Robb will no doubt come around and be a lot more comfortable in upcoming episodes. Andy. One of the best investigators ever to walk the halls of a haunted location, Andy has been frequently seen on Ghost Hunters throughout all seasons of the show. Now, he’s co-leading GHI with Robb. Donna. Researcher and case manager, Donna has been going along on ghost hunting investigations with the TAPS team for years. She often displays a lot of skill in picking new cases and finding the information which helps hold paranormal claims together at supposed haunted places. Barry. One of the investigators who helped the original Ghost Hunters team when they took their first European trip (last season on the show), Barry speaks several languages and has invaluable knowledge of life outside America. Brian. An on-again, off-again TAPS member, Brian has newly been promoted to Tech Manager. Steve, who holds the position on Ghost Hunters, is afraid to fly and as such is not a part of the GHI team. Shannon. One of the new faces to join the international ghost hunting team, Shannon is a well-educated entrepreneur who has only just begun to make her presence known on the ghost hunting team.
