Reality TV stars Jon and Kate Gosselin have been making headlines recently, not because they're raising eight children, but because of their alleged marital problems.
Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate, is an E! News Special that went to the couple’s Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, neighbourhood “to uncover the real story.” The half-hour documentary featured interviews with the couple’s friends and neighbours, but portrayed only one alleged side to both Gosselins. Season 5 of Jon and Kate Plus 8Jon and Kate Gosselin are the subject of TLC’s reality TV show, Jon and Kate Plus 8, which follows the couple’s raising their eight children: twins and sextuplets. The show, now in its fifth season, began with the couple addressing the drama that has dogged them behind the scenes: Jon’s alleged partying at nightclubs and relationship with a 23-year-old, and Kate’s alleged affair with her bodyguard. Kate Gosselin’s Relationship With BodyguardKate’s bodyguard, Steve, is a married man, and she has spoken out, saying “I am horrified” about rumours of an affair. With respect to Jon, “He’s made some very poor decisions and we’re going to have to live with it,” Kate said, while Jon said he would never cheat on his wife. The publicity has done wonders for Jon and Kate Plus 8, however: It’s TLC’s top-rated program. Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate began with a look back at the couple’s early years. They met at a picnic in 1997, married and started a family. Things began to change, according to the documentary, when they became reality TV stars after the Discovery Channel found out about them and decided to make them the subject of a documentary. Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate painted Kate as an “out-of-control diva.” Us Weekly reported Jon’s boss claimed Kate put Jon on a $5 a day budget. Kate was working writing books and travelling to speaking engagements while Jon left his job in IT to help care for the kids. He bore the brunt of Kate’s displeasure and Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate claimed he comes off as Kate’s punching bag on Jon and Kate Plus 8. Jon Gosselin’s Relationship With TeacherIn January 2009, Jon was at the Chill Lounge, where 23-year-old teacher Deanna Hummel caught his eye. “They started sending each other tequila shots across the bar,” Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate revealed. Soon Deanna was bringing him home, according to her brother, Jason. Jon would spend the night, having “sleepovers” with Deanna. A security guard at Legends nightclub in Redding, Pennsylvania, claimed he spotted Jon and Deanna doing “what appeared to be kissing” and leave at 2 a.m. Photographers on site saw them leave, as well, and captured a photo of Jon minus his wedding ring. The next week, Us Weekly released photos of Deanna sunbathing in a bikini at Jon’s house. Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate described Kate as transforming from a dowdy brunette with a mumsy hairstyle to a stylish, tummy-tucked blond who is bossy and demanding. “Every time I tried to wave to her she’d look away,” the Gosselin’s former neighbour Ryan Lightner tells Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate. The Future of Jon and Kate Plus 8The couple will continue with Jon and Kate Plus 8, Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate explained, because it is lucrative. Raising eight kids is costly, and stardom pays. The personal price, though, is having their personal lives played out in the media, as well. If E! News aimed to uncover the “real story” of Jon and Kate Gosselin as being a man who goes out for a good time, a woman who is domineering, with both people having affairs, it succeeded. Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate rehashed information that was already published in magazines such as People and Us Weekly. With respect to Jon and Kate’s alleged affairs, perspective needs to come into play. So Kate has a bodyguard. Logic dictates that a bodyguard is often with their client, being protective of them. In other words, doing their job. Jon’s relationship with Deanna is a little tougher to justify, but he has said he would not cheat on his wife. Jon and Kate: Twisted Fate is unbalanced. The documentary portrays the Gosselins in a negative light: she’s domineering, he’s a pushover. It has nothing positive to say about either of them, seemingly deliberately wanting to take them down a notch.
