The chefs finally create some great food and impress the judges. Then, they undo all of that with some wild behavior, including drinking, head-shaving and violence.
INTRODUCTION:Elia is lonely because there are no ladies left. Ilan moves in with her in part to get away from Marcel. Awww, it’s so good to see that we’re not immature in this Top Chef competition. Not at all. QUICK-FIRE CHALLENGE:Eric Ripert, who can only be described as a culinary icon, enters with Padma. She tells the chefs that their challenge is to create a dish using chocolate. Since most of the chefs don’t do dessert, this is an issue for them. Sam makes a shrimp, banana dish that ends up being a winner. Marcel puts together a creative offering without foam. Elia makes chicken rolls with a too-sweet molé-style sauce. Ilan puts chicken livers in a chocolate ganache. Yech! I’m not sure what Cliff made, but it didn’t impress Chef Ripert. As the winner, Sam gets to choose which dish he will make as part of a five-course romantic dinner – and a protein. The other chefs can NOT repeat his protein. Weird, but ….um, okay! ELIMINATION CHALLENGE:Sam decides to make a lobster and scallop dish with beets. He asks Marcel to help him plate his dish and Marcel is like, “no, dude can’t help you.” Okay! Ilan is up next. He makes a fideo (pasta/rice) with clams that everyone seems to love. Marcel then has his turn. He needs help but has none. It’s really his own fault. He serves salmon with beets and celeriac. Then, Cliff brings out a beef dish that has a plum sauce and lentil something or other that is not sitting well with the judges. Finally, Elia made a dessert ‘kiss’ with chocolate and mint that was quite a risk. She had trouble making the chocolate hearts so she had to break them. Kind of ironic, no? DRINKING AND HEAD-SHAVING: After the challenge was done, the chefs had some drinks and got a bit rowdy. Elia tells Sam, Cliff and Ilan – Marcel is off by himself as usual – that she always wanted to shave her hair. Sam and Ilan say they’ll do it with her. Ilan and Elia shave their heads. Sam chickens out. They then decide it would be way funny to shave Marcel’s head. Personally, I applaud the decision. The boy’s hair looks like Jimmy Neutron’s. However, Cliff takes things too far. He manhandles Marcel, who was sleeping even going so far as to pin him to the floor. AFTERMATH:The next day, Tom Colicchio walks into the apartments and tells Cliff that he must leave. He broke the rules by manhandling Marcel. Cliff handles this with class. He apologizes to Marcel and they end on better terms than they started with. The judges are surprised when Tom tells them what happened. Padma is very angry. They agree that Cliff probably would’ve gone home this week anyway because his food impressed them the least. FINAL RESULTS:The chefs are told, after the judges deliberate, that all four of them will be heading to Hawaii for the finale. Next week is the first of the two-part finale.
