MTV Reality show Run's House masters the art of discretion by sharing a family's personal life while still maintaining a sense of integrity.

Reverend Run formerly of the hip hop group Run DMC shares the lives of his beautiful family in the reality series Run’s House. Run’s House debuted in October 2005 and is currently in its sixth season which begins on May 15, 2009. Reality shows typically revolve around life in the fast lane and on the verge of insanity which is something television audiences enjoy. However, Run’s House goes against the grain without all of the drama it still provides wholesome entertainment for viewing audiences. Reverend Run’s children Vanessa, Angela, Jo Jo, Diggy and Russy each bring their own unique personality to the table to provide delightful episodes of family fun. Run’s House is a solid example of sharing one’s personal life while leaving something to the imagination and mastering the art of discretion.

Don’t Expose Everything all at Once

The popular reality show Run's House is a perfect example of a well balanced family who shares small details about their struggles without revealing too many personal family secrets. There are no overly dramatic episodes or heated family disputes but the show still generates high ratings. There are multiple facets of Reverend Run’s family including the entrepreneurial aspirations of his daughter’s Vanessa and Angela Simmons who eventually venture off into owning their own sneaker line called Pastry Shoes. The previous seasons of Run’s House allows viewers to slowly get to know all of Reverend Run’s childrens hopes and dreams. Jo-Jo wants to break though the shadows of his father and become a hip hop star. Russy enjoys cooking and Diggy has the entrepreneurial spirit for the world of fashion. Justine loves art and painting portraits. Overall, Run's House proves reality TV does not have to run like a fast paced marathon to gain admiration from viewing audiences.

Keep it Real but Discrete

Reverend Run does share a personal tragedy during one of the show’s episodes. Reverend Run and wife Justin experience the loss of a baby girl who is born stillborn. The family copes with the loss publicly without losing respect for the family’s privacy. Reverend Run uses each episode to draw lessons from the family’s experiences to enlighten viewers and by ending each episode with a reminder that God is Love. The world may be addicted to the shock factor in reality television episodes but Run’s House proves that it is better to slowly introduce the facts while considering another person’s thoughts and feelings. Keeping it real does not have to mean being rude and disrespectful to someone especially when it involves family matters.

Explore the Power of Intrigue

It is not necessary for a person to stand out in the crowd by being loud and obnoxious. Reality television may love the boisterous antics of the villain on the show but rarely is this person admired in everyday life. The success of Run’s House is because the show is centered on a love of family filled with positive parental guidance.

Overall, Run’s House proves it is always better to show less to gain more quality attention from others and in this case the viewing audiences attention.

I love this piece. I am one who believes discretion. Live should be enjoyed with those whom we care about. It should not be a specticle to be ogled over be onlookers.
