MTV Tuesday Nights-- The Hills and The CityIs Kristen a Maneater and Can Whitney Make it in NYC?
MTV moved both The Hills and The City to Tuesday nights, which leaves plenty of room for comparison. Viewers pick your favorites, and let the drama begin.
A full hour of relationship and work drama from both coasts keep hipsters and upper eastsiders glued to MTV on Tuesday nights. The Hills swapped out Lauren Conrad for Kristin Cavalliri, and the drama went from subtle altercations to all out cursing wars. And in NYC, Whitney battles with work, boy, and roommate drama. Drama in The Hills For viewers that are into more boy centralized arguments and nightly drink outings, The Hills will definitely tickle your fancy. Four episodes into the season, Kristin Cavalliri has stirred up trouble between Brody Jenner and girlfriend Jade, and also began dating Audrina Patridge’s ex-beau Justin Bobby. Along with the relationship issues, The Hills offers a look into the life of an alcoholic in denial. Holly, Heidi Pratt’s sister, has only been in L.A. for a short period of time, but has already adjusted to the fast pace night life. Attending every party possible and indulging in more than just a few drinks has caused all the cast of The Hills to believe Holly has an alcohol problem and should seek help. But Holly thinks otherwise. Artificial FriendshipsWith the swap of cast members, The Hills now gives the impression that the new friendships are… manufactured. Stacie, the other woman in the Heidi and Spencer love triangle from the previous season, is now best buds with Kristin. And Lo and Audrina, who initially did not hit it off well, are now gal pals along with Stephanie Pratt. Although entertaining, it is becoming more obvious how unreal this reality show is. Whitney Settles in the Big AppleIn its second season, The City now follows a more settled Whitney Port as she focuses more on her career than guys. Viewers looking to see the behind the scenes action of the world of fashion would much rather prefer The City over The Hills. Whitney deals standing out among colleagues and being sure to not get on the bad side of her boss and owner of People’s Revolution, Kelly Catron. Whitney’s friends and NYC veterans pull her in opposite directions and offer advice on which crowd she should associate herself with—the Madison Ave. set or the downtown artist crew. Both shows have their similarities, but The City offers a more relatable story line and the cast appears more genuine. What is seen in the press on The City cast members is what you see on the show. And unlike The Hills, most of the cast members are striving to achieve more -- Whitney wants to launch her clothing line and Olivia is trying to find her niche at Elle Magazine. The content on The Hills is less substantial—boys, parties, and booze. Only time will tell if the adjustments on The Hills and the new day for The City will help or hurt ratings, and if both will continue on into a new season.
