Celebrity Dance Competition vs USA Elections a Parallel Universe?

Nov 13, 2008 Nina Saville

Both nationwide competitions have harnessed the collective unconscious of the voting public, who loyally follow every nuance of their respective candidates.

The American Election is over, and John McCaine 72, has accepted defeat bowing graciously to Barack Obama who takes his seat as the President Elect of the U.S.A.

Here in the U.K., both on stage and back stage another form of electoral battle rages on, as Strictly dances into it’s ninth week and the judges are powerless to give political commentator and dancing candidate, John Sergeant 64, his marching orders even though he faces humiliating failure each week as he murders each dance with his horrid hoofing!

Is it the sympathy vote, or is there life in the bulldog yet.

Despite his poor scores last week; a 1 by judge Craig Reville Horwood for his ‘cha- cha- char’, he shook off scathing criticism from the experts, because the voting public love him. Who cares if he can’t dance, Sergeant cheers them up and they want to keep him in the race.

McCaine on the other hand an able candidate, nearing the final exhausting moments of defeat, showed himself to be a good sport and acknowledged he was beaten by the younger fitter candidate, who gave the US hope of a recovery. Obama, brilliant and a consummate orator; the world cried with joy as the victor was crowned.

British TV Audiences Pitted Against Judges Give Sergeant Sympathy Vote

In Britain, Strictly’s television audience and judges are pitted against each other. It’s a 50/50 vote and the viewers continue to flex their muscles when it comes to choosing which lamb will be saved from the slaughter. What a pity for the best of the dancers, who are ruthlessly discarded because of a smile and a wink!

This week I suspect the judges colluded with the others and gave Sergeant higher marks, hoping that the television voters might be lulled into a false sense of security and target another dancer in need of a sympathy vote.

Unfortunately the tactic didn't work and this week we had the brilliant Cherie Lunghi and Lisa Jordan in the dance off. Lunghi was eliminated after a wonderful Cha Cha. Yet again Sergeant had a stay of execution with a tepid waltz.

Of course dancing is not about leading a country, but then again if you have the best candidates like actress Cherie in the dance off, it makes a mockery of competition, especially if they are ousted simply because of the zeitgeist of Sergeant’s perverse followers.

Imagine the 'excitement' of a final dance off between John Sergeant and rugby player Austin Healey!

Americans Vote With Their Hearts and Minds

Both Obama and McCaine were serious opponents and Americans voted with their hearts and their minds in the spirit of fair competition. It wouldn’t have been such an exciting election had Sarah Palin been in their final dance off! Though I am sure she would have faired better in the ballroom than on the political platform.

Followers of Sergeant Eroding Fair Play

Followers of Sergeant who insist on toppling the scales of justice are eroding the spirit of fair play that hitherto has been the ethos of the British people, so please stop voting, before someone gets hurt!
