I loved this season of Rockstar: Supernova. For one thing, we had a truly talented group of individuals. Storm Large, Ryan Star, Patrice Pike and our four finalists just rocked hard each and every week. I loved this season. Okay! I already wrote that, but it bears repeating.
We had killer performances. Who doesn't remember Ryan's rendition of REM's "Losing My Religion"? How about Lukas' "Creep"? He hit that high note with ease! And Dilana's fantastic performances? Not many people could take a Cyndi Lauper song and rock it out, now could they?
We had some drama. What with Toby and Dilana running 'round naked? And Dilana's dressing down on national TV after she made some unsavory remarks about her competition. We also had a bit of blood when Magni got hit with a wine glass Dilana threw.
We saw human emotion. Dilana's tears. Zayra's attitude with the panel. Magni's excitement when Tommy and crew flew his baby and fiancée in from Iceland. In a nutshell, Rockstar had everything we love about reality television with some kick-ass music thrown in.
It's not a secret that Dilana was my fave. However, I am personally glad she didn't win the Supernova gig. Yes...I'm glad, glad, glad and glad.
Why? Well, Gilby Clarke offered to help Dilana, who came in second, produce her record. Dilana gets a forum to sing what she wants to in the way she wants to do it. Dilana can stand on her own. She doesn't need Supernova telling her what to sing or how to act. She will also have Dave Navarro, Gilby Clarke and Tommy Lee, three of the best rock musicians in the world, backing her up on tracks on her very own CD! Dilana was also given the opportunity to tour with Supernova and The Panic Channel. She'll be fronting the House Band. They're so killer. Maybe even better than Supernova, but I digress. (For more on that idea, read this fantastic article!)
Now, for the other finalists. I don't think they needed Supernova either. Take Toby Rand, who was knocked out third, for example. Toby should do a calendar or a nude cover to his CD. I'm just saying. I may be married, but I ain't dead, y'all. The man is fine. And he can sing. He did a wonderful rendition of Radiohead's "Karma Police". I loved it! He also channeled Billy Idol on Tuesday night's show with an energetic version of "White Wedding". Toby can do just about anything. And if he wants to plan on a career change, he could always join the Thunder from Down Under. Now, I'd pay to see that!
Magni was the fourth place finisher, but as Jason told him he can go home to become "King of Iceland." Magni, the "Iceman" is totally cool. He lit the place up with his redo of Hendrix's "Fire". At the end of the day, Magni played better with the House Band than he did Supernova. He will have no trouble becoming a star in his own right. I'd buy any CD that man made. He's got talent in spades and wants to be a respected rock guitarist as well as a singer. He can do it!
Lukas may have won the coveted prize of frontman of Supernova, but did he really get the best opportunity? I don't think so. Personally, I don't think Supernova is going to be a band with great staying power. The music they've premiered on the show is lackluster much of the time. They have a few cool riffs, but the lyrics are well, cliché - even when they don't mean to be. I often find myself feeling as if Gilby, Jason and Tommy are trying to relive or recapture something that's gone instead of reinventing themselves and creating something new.
Supernova might just propel Lukas into rock superstardom. Stranger things have happened! Last season's winner of the INXS edition of Rockstar, JD Fortune, sure needed to win! Before the series, he was virtually homeless and going nowhere. INXS took his talent and channeled it into a win-win situation. Have you heard "Pretty Vegas" or listened to their new CD, Switch?
Lukas, with over 14 years in the business, never had that big break he needed. Of course, neither did most of the other contestants, but that's neither here nor there anymore. Lukas can sing. His voice is unique. His style is punk rock all the way, a complete throwback to the 80s era with some glam tossed in. I mean he did wear lip gloss during the finale! Lukas is a former street kid who's made good. He's kicking back with some of rock royalty. It's got to feel pretty good to be him today.
Of course, I hope he asks his fans to change their name. Rossi Possi a little wimpy for a rocker, if you know what I mean.
No matter what, time will only tell who the real winner of Rockstar: Supernova was. My money's still on Dilana. Can't wait for her to release her CD!
