Tuneless In Seattle

American Idol (1.17.07)

Jan 17, 2007 Deanna Couras Goodson

Wow! I thought last night in Minneapolis was bad. Then I watched the Seattle auditions. I don't mean to be rude, but...here's the recap.

INTRODUCTION:

American Idol is looking for a musical superstar like Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Heck, they’d even settle for another Fantasia Barrino , Ruben Studdard, Justin Guarini or - perhaps even William Hung.

The series goes to different locations across this great nation to find ‘undiscovered talent’. In this, the sixth season of American Idol, they’re finding something – and it ain’t talented.

DON’T CHA WISH…

The song that everyone in Seattle seemed to butcher tonight was The Pussycat Dolls’ "Don’t cha." I must apologize to PCD. I never respected their artistry and talent before tonight. I am sorry.

I hope that no one attempts to sing this song ever again. It needs to be retired like last night’s clunker, Prince’s “KISS," Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be,” Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” and, of course, the perennial favorite, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Please, people. For the love of (you fill in the blank), don’t do this to us or the judges.

YES, I HAVE SYMPATHY FOR SIMON:

You read that right. I feel bad that Simon, Paula and Randy have to sit there for hours upon hours and listen to these people. I couldn’t do it without killing someone. I’m just saying – how many tone deaf people live in the world and why did they all head to Seattle at the same time to audition for American Idol?

SEATTLE’S NOT TO BLAME:

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t think the city has a lack of musical talent. I think other musical genres are bigger in Seattle than pop is. I know it’s the home of grunge and acts like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but … you wouldn’t have caught Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder auditioning for American Idol, would you? Man, the thought makes me cringe. Those guys were too cool for AI.

FINAL ANALYSIS:

I’m beginning to suspect that we’re tapping out one of our best resources – good singing talent. American Idol and other reality shows like it are too good at what they do. Does this mean I’ll stop watching – heck no? There’s still people out there like Jordin Sparks who can sing, y’all. They make the show worth watching and are definitely worth waiting for.
