Dilana has been the frontrunner on this season of Rockstar: Supernova. She's obviously a fan fave. Or was until last night's public dressing down by Dave Navarro.
I'm a fan of Rock Star: Supernova. I began watching the series last summer when it was Rock Star: INXS. I love me some INXS.
I wasn't really sure what Supernova was. I'm still not sure what Gilby Clarke, Jason Newsted and Tommy Lee want to be. Frankly, I don't care. The performances on this series have been fantastic and well worth watching.
Dilana, the South African born rock chick with tats and piercings - and the fantastically colored hair, has been whaling on the competition for weeks now. She's awesome! Her stage presence is unique. Her voice is Joplin-esque but with a bit more whisky and cigarettes thrown in. She's proven she can tackle any song including Cyndy Lauper's Time After Time and rock it out.
That takes some doing.
Dilana has also not been in the bottom three ONCE throughout this competition. Not even close. She's had at least one encore and was the first one chosen to sing onstage with Supernova last week. She seems like such a natural fit for this band.
And...
she seems to want to be a part of this band. She's crazy!
But, they'd be so lucky to have her.
Instead, Supernova used this week's challenge to lay traps and set bait for their resident 'BIG BITCH' as Dilana referred to herself last night.
Most of the talking segments of the show focused on Dilana's talking about other contestants, specifically Ryan Star and Lukas Rossi. When the rockers were checking out their fan mail, there was a comment that mentioned that Dilana and Ryan could share the Supernova gig.
Ryan said he'd shoot himself if that happend. Dilana said she'd shoot Ryan if it happened. Dave Navarro, who's going through an ugly split from former Baywatch babe, Carmen Electra, took Dilana to task on several occasions last night. First, for her comments to Ryan. He took special exception to the fact that she told Ryan that he'd be 'nothing without the House Band.'
Dave's reply - "all of you would be nothing without the House band."
Sure, the House Band is awesome! They totally rock and, personally I like them better than Supernova (and certainly better than Dave's new band, The Panic Channel.)
However, I know Dilana isn't the only rocker capping on other rockers. I also don't think that what she said was that bad. It seemed like Dave and perhaps the producers and Supernova themselves, who remained conspicuously quiet each time Dave took her to task, was looking for reasons to attack Dilana.
It was uncomfortable to watch.
Especially when they got to the week's 'clinic' or 'challenge'. Each of the rockers were interviewed by press people. Dilana was very vocal, but that's hardly a suprise. She's naturally outspoken and has made no apologies for it in the past.
But last night, she apologized to the band, to the fans, to Dave, to Lukas and to Ryan. No one gave her an inch. They trashed her and crapped on her. It was really disgusting.
Why take the front runner and make her feel like mincemeat? Is it to strip her ego? Why strip her ego? Is it because she's a woman? A male with an ego is macho. A woman with an ego is a bitch.
I think it's a double-standard that exists in many industries and situations. Dilana's word choices were, at times, unfortunate and a bit misguided, but she still rocks it out and is still a fantastic talent.
Hopefully, the dressing down of Dilana on national TV last night won't put her on the chopping block next week. However, I think that's what it intended to do. I think Supernova wants an excuse to get rid of the woman who's so obviously right for their band.
It seems really stupid to me, but hey - I'm not in a rock band.
What do you think? Drop me a line in the discussion area. I'd love to hear from you.
