As an Asian-American woman, I don't understand the uproar over the new season of Survivor. They'll have four tribes divided by race. People out there are screaming racism. Huh? The fact that this will be the first season of Survivor not to have 80% to 90% whites is a BAD thing? How many Latin and Asian contestants have there been? Not even one a season. The tribes will be mixed up and DE-segregated a couple of weeks into the season, and that will make for some interesting tribal relations. Will there be any race-based alliances? And will they hold up throughout the season? We'll see.
On a side note, if the Australian tribe Ogakor (remember hunky Colby?) had had a Japanese person on their team, they wouldn't have run out of rice. A handful of rice will make a whole pot of Japenese gruel called O-Kai - enough to feed several large, hungry men. It has a consistency between oatmeal and gumbo, which can vary depending on the water/rice ratio.
Gerri complaining that Keith's rice was more like a soup was hilarious to me. The way she cooked the rice, everyone had basically a cracker for dinner. Of course, that's much more practical and satisfying than a bowl of rice soup.
I first posted a version of this on the Film, TV and Pop Culture page.

I was sort of sad to see the divisions within each group. Already there's issues with at least one member of each mini tribe. In Puka we have the young Asian Americans vs. Cao Boi, who came from Vietnam and is more steeped in the old ways.
In Aitutaki, Billy is showing that he is not really about doing the hard work needed to be done. In Rarotonga, we have a showmance in the works and one member was sent to Exile Island because he took chickens from another tribe.
Finally, in Manihiki, we had a lack of unity. There were two tribes within one - the men and the women. This led to their defeat in the challenge and them sending home on of their own, one who could have helped them with leadership and making fire and other survival skills.
Race is not the only dividing factor in the world. Unfortunately, after one episode of Survivor: Cook Islands, I feel that is abundantly clear.
I believe that the uproar over the series is largely due to the fact that people hadn't even seen an episode of it yet. This Survivor is not really that much different than others. So far, I'm liking what I see and hope that the 'social experiment' makes people uncomfortable.
If it does, it means they have issues they need to work through.
What does anyone else think?

It was sad but not surprising that there would be divisions within the tribes. As a member of Hiki (was it Sundra?) said, it is still going to be about human relationships.
There are so many influences which could bind or break alliances. The obvious ones are personality, gender, age and race. In addition to that, the Latinos and Asians may experience friction within their tribes because they are each comprised of different Latinos and Asians.
As a Japanese-American, I know that one of the first things that Puka found out about each other, after "what's your name?" and "where're you from?", was "what are you?"- of course, not in those exact words. But cultural clashes within the tribes depends on the strength of each person's cultural identity.
If the pattern that began last season holds true, the four tribes will be mixed up and divided into two before long. Once that happens, the first season of Survivor where the whites are the minority will be very interesting to watch.

With 20 contestants to start with, I did think that the tribes would stay "segregated" a little longer. I suppose larger tribes makes for greater chances of conflict.
On the new Aitu tribe, Cao Boi "clicked" with Flicka better than with his former tribemates. They seemed to be too serious, even a little uptight. Here in Hawaii, ethnic jokes are common. People make jokes about their own ethnicity all the time and the jokes are generally accepted as long as they are not mean-spirited. However, if you are with someone who is uncomfortable with it, common courtesy should tell you to leave it alone.
In response to panddyra's blog, I thought that Flicka was Jessica's nickname from before she joined the show.
The Raro tribe has the majority of the buff males and also the "tart" of the season. Parvati even specifically said that she was going to be "working" Nate. In the first episode, I thought there was some mutual flirting between Adam and Candice (cuddling at night for warmth) but it never went anywhere. Ozzy will have to lay low in his new tribe. He's not the alpha male anymore.
In response to panndyra's blog, the person sent to exile island would be safe from the vote, so Raro chose the person they thought was the weakest and most likely to be targeted on Aitu.
I still can't believe that Cao Boi had that little regard for Becky. The Puka tribe won 2 immunity challenges together. How could he think that she was a "princess"?

-- I don't understand why Raro would choose the weakest 'link' to send to Exile Island. Seems like it was a poor strategy point, but that's up to them. I'm not there on the island 24/7.
Thanks for the coments. Now, Becky has had little regard for Cao Boi throughout the show so far so I can't imagine why he should show her more respect than she's shown him.

The strategy in sending the weakest link to Exile Island is to protect that person from tribal counsel, which would force that tribe to vote for one of the stronger players.
I don't remember seeing Becky express any particular disdain for Cao Boi. Yul didn't like the jokes that Cao Boi kept making and Brad thought Cao Boi talked too much.
I don't know why Ozzy is coming out to be such a villan in these discussions. Yes, what he did was underhanded, but JP had the same idea. He just didn't have the b***s to make the suggestion. Cristina was the only girl to disagree with the plan (neither of the other girls said anything at all), and it didn't seem like she tried very hard to change the others' minds.
Ozzy didn't betray Billy all on his own. The rest of the tribe all contributed. Ozzy was just the only one bold enough to voice his opinion.
Just my opinion.
